The dog will likely always bear the scars from her traumatic ordeal stitches from her surgeries line her back. She said her rapport with Phoenix is a special one literally forged by fire. Jurgensen has served as a Pure Hearts "foster mother" for the past year and has opened her home to five dogs. Jurgensen noted she is scheduled for another appointment Sunday. Veterinarians will wait to see how she heals.

Kazee said it's not yet clear if the dog will need more surgeries or skin grafts. The plan is for Phoenix to remain with Jurgensen and her 10-year-old son, Ty, until a family adopts her. Phoenix arrived early the next morning and underwent several surgeries throughout the week as the group’s medical team provided round-the-clock care. Kazee, who lives in Ormond Beach, arranged to have Phoenix brought from Miami-Dade County up to Atlantic Animal Hospital, a Pure Hearts’ emergency medical center in Port Orange. Haley Kazee, a volunteer for the shelter's regional chapter, said she saw pictures of Phoenix posted May 15 by one of her Facebook friends who was looking for someone to take custody of the abused animal. Pure Hearts Rescue is a Tampa-based nonprofit animal rescue group that finds temporary foster homes for dogs across the state at risk of being euthanized. Rescuers believe someone doused Phoenix with an accelerant and lit her on fire, then dumped her along the side of the road. The pit bull was found in Homestead with burns so severe that parts of her flesh were scorched away, according to officials from Pure Hearts Rescue. “She’s an amazing dog,” Jurgensen said from her home Thursday. Jaime Jurgensen took the dog, whose rescuers named Phoenix, into her home May 20 following a turbulent week for Phoenix that included the life-threatening experience and several surgeries. Now a Palm Coast woman is providing foster care to the traumatized animal and is helping to nurse her back to health. That’s what officials believe happened to a young pit bull found roaming the streets in South Florida two weeks ago with severe burn wounds to its back.
